The crypto community loves big headlines, especially when it suggests mainstream adoption. Over the weekend, one such headline took over X, claiming that McDonald would begin accepting XRP payments from Today (Monday, August 4th) at Select US Locations.
The post looked bold and legal. But will that hold up?
This takes a closer look at what is said and what is actually true.
Virus claim: Your Big Mac XRP?
Posted from your account on August 3rd @ripple_queen declaration:
“Breaking News: McDonald's to Pilot #XRP Payments to Monday Monday, Select US Locations reportedly will begin accepting $XRP…”
The tweet described this as a potential “game-changing moment” for encryption and XRP ledgers. It suggested that customers could immediately pay fast food costs in seconds using XRP, and ended with: “If it's true, it's huge!”
Naturally, the post exploded across Crypto Twitter. Some small creators and XRP fans have begun talking about it. When XRP prices skyrocketed and market capitalization surpassed McDonald's itself, the timing felt right.
But was it real?
Have you made an announcement? No transactions.
Here's why rumors can't stand it:
There are no announcements from McDonald's or Ripple: Neither company has confirmed anything about XRP payments. There are no press releases, blog updates or official statements. Because of this big move, you will be hoping for formal communication, especially from Ripple. This usually provides regulatory disclosures when entering new markets.
The claim started with a single unpolished tweet. The original post uses ambiguous terms such as “reportedly” and does not cite the source. It's a red flag. Even in the reply, many users pointed out that there was no evidence and called it as speculation.
XRP is not used for such retail payments: XRP has legitimate use cases, primarily across border banking and institutional transfers. That doesn't mean it's adopted by fast food chains. Ripple's partnership has always focused on financial infrastructure, not retail pilots. In the future, maybe. But that's not the case now.
Why did the XRP X MacDonald's rumors spread so quickly?
To be fair, the XRP took several weeks.
The token recently surpassed McDonald's in market capitalization, exceeding $215 billion. It has grown by 4.11% over the past 24 hours and is currently trading nearly $2.99. And the weekly institutional inflows are good, and the market is clearly showing confidence.
So when someone claimed that XRP was in the fast food space, people were ready to believe it.
Final Verdict: Not Truth
There is no McDonald's-XRP partnership. I won't be buying a Big Mac from Crypto today.
The claim was a rumor about a substanceless virus. If that changes, you can hear it from official sources.
