SIMD-0266: Efficient Token Program Update, proposed by Anza, developer of Solana's dominant node software client Agave, will bring fundamental improvements to token operations on the Solana (SOL) blockchain. Resource usage can be reduced by a factor of 200 compared to existing SPL architectures.
98% reduction in resource usage: SIMD-0266 compliant: Efficient token program upgrade
SIMD-0266: Efficient Token Program, one of the most important Solana improvement proposals for 2025, is expected to be a breakthrough in the efficiency of token creation in Solana (SOL). As Anza, Solana's infrastructure company and proposal author, explained, the economics of computing resources can reach 98%.
1/ SIMD-0266: Efficient Token Program, written by @0x_febo, proposes to replace the current SPL token program with a new compute-optimized version called p-token. This upgrade reduces token program CU usage by up to 98%. Here's how it works 🧵 pic.twitter.com/5ASETDEYqu

Currently, 10% of block compute units are devoted to token program instructions. Designed to replace the SPL standard, p-tokens free up nearly 12% of block space for other transactions, thereby increasing Solana's effective transaction throughput.
This means new types of instructions are added to handle more complex DeFi structures, saving blockchain computing unit expenditure.
New instructions like Batch and UnwrapLamports further reduce the compute in common DeFi patterns, allowing multiple token operations per CPI and eliminating the need for ephemeral native accounts. Programs can now execute complex flows much more efficiently.
With 100% backward compatibility, p-token deployment will be a drop-in upgrade. There are no changes to existing SPL tokens.
This paves the way for larger resource allocations with new blocks, with the ultimate goal of a faster and more performant Solana (SOL).
Solana (SOL) preparing for significant Alpenglow upgrade in early 2026
Enthusiasts in the Solana (SOL) community have welcomed the new design, highlighting that unprecedented decentralized finance opportunities will open up here.
Resurrection of Solana's Defi

As previously covered on U.Today, Solana (SOL) is nearing an upgrade to Alpenglow. Scheduled for early 2026, it will phase out historical evidence and replace it with a more efficient consensus scheme.
The security, performance, and speed of the Solana (SOL) blockchain will be significantly improved.
