Vitalik Buterin praised ZKsync's Atlas upgrade, calling the team's work “underrated but valuable.”
Atlas brings over 15,000 TPS, 1-second finality, and near-zero fees to Ethereum's Layer 2 ecosystem.
This upgrade turns Ethereum into a real-time liquidity hub, removing the need for separate layer 2 liquidity pools.
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin gave a strong nod to ZKsync's latest upgrade, Atlas, praising the team's work. “Underrated but valuable.”
His post quickly caught the attention of the entire crypto community. This update brings major changes to the way Ethereum handles speed, cost, and liquidity.
ZKsync's Atlas brings big numbers and big changes
ZKsync, known for its Layer 2 scaling solution that enables Ethereum to process more transactions at a lower cost, has launched an upgrade to Atlas. The numbers are impressive: over 15,000 transactions per second (TPS), 1 second finality, and nearly zero fees.
However, as ZKsync co-founder Alex Gluchowski pointed out, these numbers “It's just part of the story.”
The bigger advancement lies in how Atlas changes the way Ethereum and Layer 2 interact.
Ethereum becomes a liquidity hub
Previously, each Layer 2 network such as Arbitrum, Base, and even ZKsync Era had to maintain its own liquidity hub to process transactions smoothly. This means that liquidity is fragmented and interactions between networks are slowed down.
Atlas changes that. As ZKsync explained, “Ethereum is now the main capital hub for ZKsync.” This upgrade gives L2 Chain direct access to Ethereum liquidity, eliminating the need for separate pools. L2-to-L2 transactions now occur in about 1 second, and L1-to-L2 transfers complete faster than a single Ethereum block.

This also opens the door for institutional investors and real world asset (RWA) projects that rely on speed and trust. Instead of waiting days for funds to move, you can now make payments directly on Ethereum in near real-time.
A step towards institutional grade Ethereum
For Ethereum, this upgrade does more than just improve performance. It strengthens its position as a global financial settlement layer, connects liquidity and enables the efficient movement of capital.
Buterin's praise is the recognition that ZKsync is contributing to the evolution of Ethereum.
he wrote, “ZKsync has done a lot of valuable and underappreciated work in the Ethereum ecosystem, and we’re excited to see this coming from them!”
What it means for the future of Ethereum
Atlas bridges the long-standing gap between Ethereum’s main chain and Layer 2. This will make Ethereum a true liquidity powerhouse and allow all ZKsync chains to connect to the same capital pool without any friction.
Simply put, this upgrade brings Ethereum closer to a fast, scalable, and reliable base layer for both DeFi users and institutions.
And with Buterin's public support, it's clear that Atlas' era for Ethereum's next phase of growth is just beginning.
